Colors are often associated with words such as fun, creativity, experiments, mixing, design, and moods. But when a color is picked to represent a year, it becomes a bit more specific. For the year 2018, Pantone Color Institute declares Pantone 18-3838 UltraViolet to represent the year 2018, and as ever, their definition is specific to the color chosen.
According to the Institute, UltraViolet “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” It is hopeful to drive us to new discoveries and reflections in technology, creativity, spirituality, and even pursuance to a world beyond ours.
It is also interesting that Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s vice president, speaks the color representation as more than “what’s trending” but a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.
With this color to be pretty much on everything this year, it is interesting how it will affect and evoke people to positively stimulate their individuality. It does not simply expect one to be creatively expressive, but the color has also been historically known to be mystical and reflective which in hopeful terms would “energize communities” and bring connections.
Pantone also encouraged brands and designers to feel empowered to use this color to “inspire and influence.” I think about those powerful advertisement campaigns that cause people to act and be encouraged. I wonder how many marketing strategies would be planned on this purple baseline? Who knows, companies may also consider repainting their offices as part of their people management program. After all, color psychologists have found out that colors influence one’s performance.
So, you might want to feel a bit edgy at the start of the year by trying on a new purple wardrobe or redesigning your bedroom into this new Pantone. I am certain there will be tons of suggestions and willing services to accommodate your whim. But will it bring you benefit other than you’re in “a trend”?
Well, it is just day 2 of 2018, so brace yourself, we may be up for purple revolution.
